Bellefontaine’s boys wrestling team hosted its annual Jimmy Mac Invitational on Saturday and finished fourth in the seven-team field.
Beavercreek won the tournament with 226 points. Wayne was the runner-up with 178.5, Hillsboro was third with 176 and the Chiefs were next with 157 points.
Bellefontaine had four second-place finishers on the day. That group included Jared Young (106), Kaden Hobart (120), Devyn Horsley (132) and Zane Tevis (138).
Taking third for the Chiefs were Wes Morris (132), Zavier May (150), Mason Cook (157), Sam Varian (165) and Parker Knox (190).
Draven Drake (120) and Payton Gilbert (126) finished fourth and Jeffery Smith (113) was fifth. Charlie Bible (285) finished in seventh.
The Jimmy Mac tourney is held in honor of the late Jim McDonald, who was a longtime wrestling coach at BHS. This year’s Jimmy Mac Award was presented to Chieftain assistant coach Kyle Spence, who also works with the Bellefontaine youth wrestling program.
“We had a solid day and saw some improvement,” said BHS head coach Aaron LaBatt.
“We had a handful of guys wrestle well, but they had a bad match or one mistake that cost them. We need to work on finishing tournaments better and paying more attention to the little details that make a big difference.
“Individually, Zavier May had a nice day and showed a little more of what we know he is capable of. I thought Wes Morris really stepped up today and Devyn Horsley had a solid tourney. Sam Varian and Mason Cook also looked improved.”
