Lakers finish second overall, BHS third at Central Buckeye Conference tourney
It was another program first for Bellefontaine’s wrestling team Saturday as the Chieftains claimed the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail division championship at Kenton Ridge High School.
The Chieftains placed all 11 of their wrestlers on its way to claiming the program’s first CBC championship. It is also the first-ever league title in wrestling history for Bellefontaine.
“It was a special day for our kids,” said BHS head coach Aaron LaBatt. “This type of opportunity doesn’t always come around. We told them to make a decision about how our day was going to go. They knew they had a shot to do this and they delivered.
“We had some ups and downs early in the day, but we stressed how every one of them mattered to this team race. We won by nine points, so that was certainly the case. Coach (Jordy) Buck and myself are extremely proud of them. It is a great time to be a Chieftain wrestler.”
Graham, which is currently ranked third in the country, finished first overall and claimed the Mad River division crown by winning 11 out of 14 weight classes with 329.5 points.
It was a tight local battle as Indian Lake finished second overall and second in the Mad River division with 133 points. Bellefontaine was just four points behind for third overall and first in the Kenton Trail division with 129 points. Urbana was fourth overall with 128.5 points.
Benjamin Logan finished eighth overall and fourth in the Mad River division standings with 75 points.
