Charles Franklin Altstaetter, 94, of Cairo, died at 8:55 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, at Otterbein of Cridersville.
He was born June 5, 1922, in Allen County to the late Emil and Lula Garner Altstaetter.
On Sept. 27, 1946, he married Louise Vandemark and she survives at Primrose Retirement Community, Lima.
Also surviving are his children, Michael (Mary Jo) Altstaetter of Bellefontaine, Gail (Melinda) Altstaetter of Lima, Carol (Charlie) Doseck of New Knoxville and Dennis (Nancy) Altstaetter of Wendell, N.C.; 11 grandchildren: 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rosa Lee (Dick) Greenway of Pandora.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Jacob “Jack” (Leah) Altstaetter; one son in-law, Dennis Katterheinrich; and one great-grandson.
Charles served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Cairo American Legion Post, where he had served as commander. He worked as a tool and die maker at Westinghouse for 40 years and was a member of the Lima Baptist Temple.
Charles enjoyed working in his print shop, gardening and woodworking. He found pleasure in making small plaques with Bible verses in numerous languages, which he shared with many people including missionaries throughout the world.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, 10879 State Route 12, Columbus Grove, and an hour prior to the 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, funeral service at Lima Baptist Temple, 982 Brower Road, Lima. Pastor Gary Hohman officiates. Burial follows at Altstaetter Cemetery, with military rites by the Columbus Grove American Legion and VFW Color Guard.
