Christ-based 12-step program offers relief from life’s hurts and hangups
A group of local churches have come together to bring a nationally respected resource to Logan County’s fight against substance abuse and other negative behaviors.
Celebrate Recovery, which formed 25 years ago at the California-based Saddleback Church ministry and has grown to a program in 29,000 churches nationwide, will host its first local meeting at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct, 13, at Union Station, 613 Hamilton St., and will meet at the same time each Friday night.
While the effort to bring Celebrate Recovery to Logan County started with the Community Coalition for Opiate Relief Efforts, it can help participants deal with life’s many troublesome issues in a Christian framework, volunteer organizers Sarah Warren and Tammy Nicholl said.
“Our initial concerns were on the opiate problem in Logan County and the deaths attributed to that,” Warren said. “However, there are many other hurts, habits and hang-ups that are causing great harm to people in Logan County that through Christ we can help.”
“As a Christian in the community and a part of the public system responsible for prevention, treatment and recovery support services I would say that while treatment is key in people gaining successful recovery, maintaining recovery is where the church community plays a powerful role,” said Nicholl, who is also service director for the Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services Board of Logan and Champaign Counties.
“Healing in the brain is half the battle. Healing of the heart adds purpose and meaning to life. I think we need all of us to be truly successful in promoting a strong, healthy community.”
