MARK BRUNSWICK |
Mark Brunswick is returning to the Bellefontaine High School baseball program he guided to a pair of state final four appearances in the early 2000s.
Brunswick, who spent the past five seasons as the head coach at Marysville, was announced as the Chiefs’ new coach during Monday’s board of education meeting. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Art Caudill in May. Caudill led the Chiefs for eight seasons.
“With the help of the administration, the school and the community, I have been given the opportunity to come back home,” said Brunswick, who has been a longtime social studies teacher at BHS. “It’s an honor and something I am deeply appreciative of. It is exciting to be able to continue to develop kids on and off the field.”
Brunswick, a Coldwater native who was drafted by the New York Mets in the third round of the 1984 Major League Baseball draft, was the Chiefs’ head coach from 1995 until 2010.
He led the Chiefs to their first final four in 2004 and returned them to the state tourney in 2006.
“Mark brings a wealth of baseball knowledge with him, as well as many years of coaching experience,” said Bellefontaine athletic director Matt Comstock.
“In addition to his baseball related skills, Mark discussed with me during our interview the focus he has on re-energizing youth baseball in our community.
Most important to me were the things he mentioned regarding team building and serving the community. I coached alongside Mark when I was the softball coach many years ago, and I know he can be a great coach.”
