BIS Youth club proposes disability playground equipment park plan
Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities Superintendent Saul Bauer discussed at the board’s recent meeting a disability-friendly playground idea that has been proposed by a group of students for installation at one of the city parks.
The Dare to Be Aware Club at Bellefontaine Intermediate School consists of 18 typical and special needs students, with two adult advisers. They focus on raising awareness and fostering inclusion of students with learning disabilities, such as autism, cognitive delays or dyslexia, Mr. Bauer explained.
Members of the youth club have pitched a proposal to the LCBDD and the Bellefontaine Joints Recreation District to install a playground that is fully accessible to children with disabilities at Blue Jacket Park, as detailed recently in the Examiner.
The children talked about their desire to play at the city parks alongside their siblings and friends with different abilities.
They noted that this inclusive equipment is expensive, but they plan to conduct fundraisers and apply for grants to assist with this project. Kris Myers, Bellefontaine Joints Recreation District superintendent, said he is fully behind the students’ efforts.
