GoFundMe page established for accessible Fox Island playground
Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities Board members decided at their Thursday evening virtual meeting to postpone the agency’s 2020 chicken barbecue until further notice because of ongoing concerns with the pandemic.
Superintendent Saul Bauer detailed some of the obstacles to the preparation and implementation of this year’s event, which was previously scheduled for October.
The barbecue planning team also explained some of the safety requirements that would have to be implemented because of COVID-19 and the significant concerns for the health of individuals with developmental disabilities and those working the event.
In other matters, Superintendent Bauer shared that the Come Play at the Lake Team in conjunction with the ILDC has continued to work on the Fox Island playground and have chosen a vendor, Midstates Recreation.
Two plans have been presented for consideration. The team continues to meet and plan fundraising efforts to assist in the completion of a fully accessible park.
The cost of the playground will exceed $250,000 and a GoFundMe page has been established for contributions at https://www.gofundme.com/f/fox-island-all-inclusive-playground.
Also at the meeting, Jason Moyer, Service and Support Administration Department director, trained the board members on Major Unusual Incidents and Unusual Incidents.
Moyer said a Major Unusual Incident puts a person’s health and welfare at risk, such as: medical emergencies, exploitation, theft, abuse, significant injury, assault, law enforcement involvement, unapproved behavioral support and others. MUIs must be reported to the LCBDD or the investigative agent within a certain period of time based on the seriousness of the incident.
An Unusual Incident is an incident that is not consistent with a person’s care or service plan and is not an MUI.
More information about MUIs and UIs are available at the agency’s website, www.logancbdd.org, or at the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, dodd.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/dodd/health-and-welfare/uimui/.
Moyer if someone is aware of any abuse of a person with a developmental disability or any MUI, contact the Logan County Board of DD at (937) 592-0015 or report a MUI by calling the DODD Abuse and Neglect Hotline at (866) 313-6733.
Superintendent Bauer shared that the Service and Support Administration team is working to honor all direct service providers for Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, Sept. 13-19, by presenting them with a gift of appreciation. He expressed his gratitude to the exceptional providers in Logan County during this challenging time.
“With the vulnerable nature of people who have disabilities in our county, it is recognized that DSPs are providing excellent care and are commended for their concern and care for our vulnerable citizens,” he said. “This is a great opportunity to highlight the dedicated, innovative direct support workforce that is the heart and soul of supports for people with disabilities.”
In other board business Superintendent Bauer explained that many of employees are back in agency buildings safely providing services. Employees can work in the buildings, as needed, only when protocols are followed to keep people safe.
If an in-person meeting or screening is needed, it is scheduled when few people are in the building and the required safety protocol are followed.
Rose Canter, Special Olympics coordinator, has presented several individuals for hire for coaching positions for Special Olympics, including Justin Duvall, Bob Stierhoff and Lisa Russell. They have been accepted pending approval of all necessary paperwork and BCI checks.
The board approved final grant funding approval from the Ohio Department of Education in the following amounts: $48,443.42 for IDEA-B Special Education and $37,802.92 for IDEA Early Childhood Special Education.
Information was received from Lynn Wolters, WestCON COG, that the recent agency audit, performed by the Ohio Auditor of State, was a clean audit with two recommendations.
