The Bellefontaine Middle School TECHFIT Team received first place Dec. 8 at the TECHFIT Challenge at Purdue University, where eight teams from Indiana and Ohio showcased “exergames” they created by utilizing various computer programs and applications.

A total of 31 BMS students traveled to the competition as representatives of the new after-school club that began this year. Several BMS staff members teachers attended a training session during the summer at the university for TECHFIT, which stands for Teaching Engineering Concepts to Harness Future Innovators and Technologists.
The competition included a large group presentation from each team, where members shared how their game was created, built and played. The exergames touched on many different themes, including a CrossFit circuit, a Pacman-like game and a game that looked like Quidditch with a Mayan twist.
The BMS team received the first-place trophy as a result of their excellent teamwork, learning and adapting to problems, fundraising efforts, ability to write a grant, and their community connection through a walking program they established with residents at Green Hills Community, staff members noted.
