Logan County’s local cheese manufacturer Blue Jacket Dairy is celebrating state level success after receiving three ribbons at the Ohio State Fair Cheese Competition Thursday.
The popular Lemon Jewel Quark, a creamy sweet cheese, placed first in the ‘Fresh Unripened” cheese category. It is made from pasteurized whole cow’s milk, fresh lemon zest and a touch of sweetness.
“This much-loved cheese can be spread on a bagel or toast for breakfast or enjoyed with a bowl of fresh berries,” cheese maker Angel King said in a release.
Competing in the “Open Class for Other Mammal Milk” the local business also won first place for their Feta and second place for the Arrowhead Chevre. Both of these cheeses are made from goat’s milk.
Since 2008, Jim and Angel King have been making a wide variety of artisan cheese: fresh cheddar cheese curds, Gretna Grillin’, quark, chevre, feta and aged cheese at their creamery, 1434 County Road 11, Bellefontaine.
Their cheese is distributed throughout Ohio to restaurants, specialty and grocery stores, cheese shops and farmers markets.
“We are honored by the awards and appreciate all of our customers that regularly use our cheese,” Mrs. King said.
