Benjamin Logan High School senior Brent Luttmer won second place at a state level Japanese Speech Contest hosted by Japan America Society of Central Ohio.
There were eight finalists for the high school level, and this was the second year in row that Brent was nominated as a JASCO speech contest finalist. Brent, who serves as the BLHS Japanese National Honor Society vice president, received a sliver trophy this year and a $200 Barnes & Noble gift certificate.
Each speech was required to be three minutes in length followed by a series of questions provided by the judging panel. Students were scored on the overall quality of their speech, fluency and articulation as well as their ability to respond to direct questions pertaining to their chosen topic.
Brent’s speech focused on his experience of working as a robotic team member, reflecting his first year as part of his school’s robotics club and the struggles the team faced in his first competition and their achievement in the second contest.
JASCO started hosting the Annual Japanese Speech Contests in 1999 as an opportunity for Japanese-language learners to showcase their achievements.
