The Ohio Reading Recovery Council recently announced that Benjamin Logan Elementary will receive financial assistance for training, professional development, and other early literacy efforts in the form of teacher-training grants for up to four teachers to support the startup of Reading Recovery.
Teachers being trained include: Leslie Everett, Kayla Doseck, Paula Naragon, and Abbey Shields.
The grant will cover the teacher training tuition costs for six semester hours of graduate credit from Wright State University through their Reading Recovery Training Center.
Reading Recovery is a short-term intervention for first graders having extreme difficulty with early reading and writing. Specially trained teachers will work individually with students in daily 30-minute lessons lasting 12 to 20 weeks. After a full series of lessons, about 75 percent of these formerly lowest students reach grade-level standard.
Collen Bodin, BLES principal, and Sally Stolly, director of administrative services, have had on-going communication with the Wright State University teacher trainers who have extensive experience with remote learning.
Throughout the spring and summer the trainers have been participating in both national and regional task forces and working groups focused on problem-solving how to do Reading Recovery lessons in a variety of settings, depending on how face-to-face circumstances may change in the elementary school throughout this year.
“We are excited by the opportunity this unique training presents for our teachers to experience professional growth,” Stolly said. “The safety of our staff and the children’s safety are our top priority as we plan for teaching and learning in the coming weeks.”
