A local teenager was recognized for his commitment to a court program that has allowed him to make documentaries and help create the mural that adorns the corner of a downtown building.
Caleb Joey Howell, 16, of Bellefontaine, was presented with a Community Recognition Award for his involvement with the Logan County Family Court’s Circles Project. The statewide award was presented last week during the annual meeting of the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges.
“I was honestly surprised; it was my first award ever,” Joey said. “I thought it was for the documentary, but it ended up being for me.”
Joey has been involved with the juvenile court program for most of the past three years and has helped with short documentaries, including one titled Dream Bigger: The Making of a Mural about the installation of the tile mosaic mural on the Logan County Juvenile Detention Center. They are also in the final phases of editing of a new documentary about the impact of drug abuse on the community and are planning yet another on the importance of food and wellness in a healthy lifestyle.
Working alongside Chris Westhoff of the LoCo Art Spot and Mad River Theater Works, Joey is a video operator and editing assistant for the projects.
He said the Circles Project has helped him develop his interest in photography and look at life from a new perspective.
“The best part is getting to work with a camera,” Joey said. “I’ve always had a passion for cameras. Photography is one of the things I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid other than working on cars on anything with an engine.
