Service to country and community have been hallmarks of life in the village of West Liberty since its founding 200 years ago, and that is a prevailing theme for the weekend-long 200th birthday celebration of the village, according to event organizers.

A four-day celebration of the 200th anniversary of the village’s founding gets under way later today, and weekend festivities are focused on highlighting the selfless efforts of individuals dating back two centuries who have helped shape West Liberty into what it is today.
West Liberty’s founding dates to 1815 when John Enoch came to the area prospecting for gold.
According to the information from the West Liberty Historical Society, the village settled with the opening of a gristmill on the Mad River in 1816. As pioneers frequented the mill, eventually a town, hotel and post office opened by 1817. The village was incorporated in 1834.
