Bellefontaine’s girls bowling team enjoyed an historic day at the Division I district bowling tournament in Beavercreek on Thursday.
The Chiefs placed fifth to earn a qualifying spot to next week’s state tournament in Columbus.
This is the first time a girls bowling team from Bellefontaine has qualified to the state tourney. The Chiefs had previously sent three individuals — Jessica Hoy, Jessi Moore and Alyson Greenbaum — to state, but had never advanced an entire squad.
The top six teams in the 24-team district field earned state berths.
Bellefontaine finished with a pin count of 3,546. That was 233 pins higher than last week’s score at the sectional tournament, where the Chiefs were the ninth and last team to qualify for districts.
“The girls did a great job all day of supporting each other,” said Bellefontaine head coach Jane Kline. “This group gets along so well and they really push and support each other.”
