AAUW contest raises $2,000 for education initiatives
Having three history teachers, a science guy and a math teacher has proved to be a winning combination for the fifth-time winners of the annual Nothing Trivial About Education trivia bee.
But not having an English teacher on the team almost proved to be a costly mistake for Bellefontaine High School Team A on Wednesday evening.
“We did great until that last round,” BHS Principal Bill Badenhop, who taught science during his time in the classrooms, said of the event, which is hosted by the American Association of University Women’s Logan County Branch.
The final of the 10 rounds was an English teacher’s dream category as it began with three questions that judged contestants from the 23 participating teams’ understanding of the difference between “homophones,” or words that are pronounced the same but have different origins, spellings or meanings; “homographs,” which are spelled the same but may have different pronunciations, origins and meanings; and “homonyms,” which are spelled and pronounced the same as other words but have different meanings or origins.
