Two groups of Benjamin Logan High School juniors from a government class asked the school board’s permission to launch new programs in their senior year aimed at tackling two major social issues affecting teens.
Avery Braun, Lauryn LeVan and Sabrina Lloyd said their idea is to begin weekly support groups for students struggling with issues that may lead to suicidal thoughts or attempts, while Emma Brown, Cadey Eagy and Nolan Rivers said they want to address alcohol and substance abuse through additional programming at the high school and middle school.
All six of the students are part of a class taught by Jill McKelvey, who is retiring at the end of the year and assigned the students the projects as part of a course capstone.
“Suicide is a serious problem that isn’t talked about enough,” Sabrina told the board Monday evening. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens, according to the students who said their plan is to start an afterschool Thursday support group that would be facilitated by Emily Pool, a Consolidated Care Inc. licensed counselor assigned to the school.
