Benjamin Logan educators in grades K through 12 participated in a training Friday to focus on the 5 Gs Remote Learning Framework.
A morning and afternoon session for professional learning was provided in collaboration with the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center.
Benjamin Logan students begin the 2020-21 school year Thursday, Sept. 10, in a regular, face-to-face format for teaching and learning.
However, the district is provided the professional learning to prepare the teachers should there be a chance that remote instruction continues to be at least a component of school moving forward.
To assist teachers and districts in preparing for remote instruction, the Midwest Regional ESC’s curriculum team has created this remote learning framework centered around the “5 Gs” —Grab attention, Give content, Generate discussion, Gain data, and Grant feedback.
As students engage in remote learning, the instruction should include these critical aspects, the presenters said.
The MRESC Curriculum team encouraged teachers to reflect on the following when planning the elements of their lesson and choosing what tools to use:
• What can I do to engage my students in learning immediately?
• What content must I give to students in order for them to learn the new material?
• What discussion/communication will help to strengthen students’ understanding of the material?
• What do I need from my students to see if they have mastered the skill/content that has been delivered?
• What do I need to share with students about their individual strengths, weaknesses, or misconceptions to strengthen their learning?
The district is partnering with the Jefferson County Educational Service Center’s Virtual Learning Academy to enroll 140 students across the district who selected 100 percent online learning for the first semester. Those students are still Benjamin Logan pupils; however, their instruction is completed online with certified VLA instructors.
