The Benjamin Logan Local School District joins more than 700 school districts throughout Ohio to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month, Superintendent John Scheu announced this week.
“Our school board members are citizen-servants who assume critical responsibilities and often make difficult decisions for our district, all with minimal pay,” Scheu said. “Their emphasis is always on the future success of the children in our district. Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to say thanks for all they do.”
Serving as a connection between the community and classroom, school board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools. The Benjamin Logan board of education is responsible for 1,652 students, 200 employees and three schools.
Board members will be honored at the upcoming 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, organizational and regular meeting that takes place at the central office conference room.
Current board members include: President Tod Johnson, one year served, current owner of Angle’s Nursery & Landscaping, retired from NEX vice president, company operations; Vice President Deb Johnson, three years served, retired school administrator; member Karen Dill, three years served, retired school teacher; member Scott Spriggs, one year served, assistant principal at Heritage Elementary School (Lima City Schools); member Kathy Stierhoff, three years served, retired teacher.
Some of the recent district accomplishments under the board’s leadership include reallocation of resources and reduction of expenditures through cost saving measures such as zero based budgeting, bus routing efficiency and utility management, officials related.
“It’s more important than ever that communities support public education so that today’s students are prepared to be productive citizens and the leaders of tomorrow,” the superintendent said. “Please take a moment and tell school board members ‘thanks for caring about our children and giving so much to our community.’ Let them know we support them and that their commitment to serve the district is recognized and truly appreciated.”
