The growth has been gradual, with the numbers and talent level rising a little bit at a time.
The culmination of years of hard work and dedication has paid off in a big way for the Bellefontaine swim program this year.
Fueled by some stellar veterans as well as a few talented newcomers, the Chieftain girls won their first Central Buckeye Conference championship this winter.
“That was really exciting for our swimmers,” said BHS head coach Sharon Lewis. “This is a really close team and that was our first championship. It was a great moment for the program.”
Following their historic performance at the league meet, the Chiefs turned in a sensational effort at last weekend’s Division II sectional meet in Trotwood.
The Chiefs won five individual events, finished second in four others and qualified 12 of their 28 swimmers to Friday’s district meet at Miami University.
Bellefontaine also set two new school records in the relays.
“With the swimmers we had and with who we had coming in, I expected this to be a really good season,” said Lewis. “But I have been really impressed with how everyone has stepped up their times. Our depth has been outstanding. I am proud of every swimmer on our team for the work they have put in.”
