Bellefontaine’s boys and girls cross country teams opened the season by taking top honors at the Early Bird Classic on Tuesday at Benjamin Logan High School.

The Chieftains won both team races, had the top finisher in the boys race and the second-best runner in the girls race.
The Chieftain girls took first in the 11-team race with 44 points and Tecumseh was a distant second with 94 points. Emmanuel Christian edged Fairbanks 132-133 to finish in third. Host Ben Logan came in eighth with 175 points and Indian Lake was 11th with 247 points.
In the boys race, the Chieftains held off Jonathan Alder 58-67 to claim the first-place spot in the 12-team field.
