Holland Theatre set to kick off 2022 with shows this month
Representatives from the historic Holland Theatre are excited to begin the spring 2022 season, with three shows planned for this month, including one that is already sold out.
“We’re looking forward to kicking off a new year with dynamic content from young, genre-bending artists,” artistic director Chris Westhoff said.
The season opens with guitarist and composer Kaki King in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21.
Hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as “a genre unto herself,” King is known for her percussive and jazz-tinged melodies and multimedia live shows.
Next, the theater welcomes the Oshima Brothers at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28.
This duo blends songs from the heart with lush harmonies to produce what NPR described as a “roots-based pop sound that is infectious.” This concert is part of the Holland’s Backstage Series, an intimate concert experience with both the audience and musicians on the stage.
Continuing the theme of sibling harmonies, Girl Named Tom will take the Holland Theatre stage during a sold-out show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29.
Recent winners of NBC’s The Voice Season 21, this trio captured votes with their intricate harmony and heartfelt performances.
Built in 1931 in downtown Bellefontaine, the Holland Theatre is the nation’s only atmospheric Dutch theater. The building had fallen into disrepair in the 1990s after being converted into a cineplex but was saved from demolition when a local teacher and students took an interest in the structure.
Buoyed by community support and government and private grants, the theater completed a multi-million dollar restoration in 2019 shortly before Covid hit. Staff and volunteers were enthusiastic about re-opening for a full slate of music and theater in the 2021-22 season.
