Macy Arn is helping people take notice of Benjamin Logan swimming.
Just a freshman, Arn earned the female swimmer of the year award for the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River division this season by winning the 200 freestyle and finishing second in the 100 butterfly at the conference meet.
At last week’s Division II sectional meet, Arn won the 200 individual medley in a school-record time and was third in the 100 freestyle with a school record and personal-best time.
She has qualified for Friday’s Southwest District meet at Miami University in both events.
“I wasn’t expecting to do this well as a freshman,” said Arn. “I thought I had a pretty good chance to make it to districts, but I didn’t expect to be in the top 10 times.”
Arn has the seventh-fastest qualifying time in the 200 individual medley and the ninth-fastest qualifying time in the 100 freestyle.
The top two finishers in each event at the district meet move on to the state meet, with 16 at large qualifiers being selected on the basis of times recorded in the district meets.
“I want to get my time in the 200 IM under 2:12 and I want to drop a half-second off my time in the 100 free,” said Arn. “I am hoping to make it to state in both events.
“My goal is to make it to state all four years, so it would be nice to get there this year to help prepare me for the future.”
Although she is in her first year of high school swimming, Arn is a veteran of the sport. She started swimming competitively at the age of seven and has been very active in the YMCA and city youth swim programs.
She has already competed several times at the Miami University pool, which will help ease her nerves Friday.
“I really like that pool,” she said. “I go there multiple times a year with the club team, so I am very familiar with it.”
Arn is one of just five members of the Ben Logan swim team. Despite its small size, Arn has found a way to thrive.
“I wish we had more swimmers so we could compete in the relays, but I really enjoy my teammates and I’ve had a lot of fun with them.”
