Two people were charged Thursday with drug offenses after officers with the Bellefontaine Police Department’s Criminal Patrol Unit conducted a 5:05 p.m. traffic stop in the 400 block of Woodland Drive.
Gregory Coons, 47, of 416 Woodland Drive, was charged with felony possession of heroin and three felony counts of trafficking in heroin. Jennifer Joseph, 42, of the same address, was charge with felony possession of heroin and two felony counts of trafficking in heroin.
The unit had developed information that the couple would travel to Columbus, pickup large amounts of heroin and then return to Bellefontaine to sell it. Officers used the information to obtain arrest warrants for the duo.
Coons was removed from the front passenger seat and quickly taken to the Logan County Jail where he turned over a large balloon filled with more than a half ounce of black tar heroin.
Meanwhile, Joseph, who was driving, gave officers consent to search the car. Drug paraphernalia, cellular phones and cash were found in the car.
She too was lodged in jail.
Officers also served a search warrant on the house which was occupied by Coons’ mother. She was served with the warrant and informed of her son and Joseph were arrested for trafficking.
The search focused on a rear bedroom shared by Coons and Joseph. They recovered digital scales, hypodermic syringes, pipes for abusing methamphetamine and crack cocaine, more cellular phones, packaging material typically used to by drug traffickers and cash.
Between the car and house, officers seized nearly $900.
