West Liberty Village Council in a regular meeting Monday appropriated $30,000 toward its new police department, but still hasn’t decided where to build, or what to do with the old police station at 112 E. Columbus St.
The $30,000 appropriation, approved on its first reading, is intended for architectural and engineering services, councilwoman Jill McKelvey said. The newly appropriated funds are part of about $261,000 the village has available, but was not appropriated this fiscal year.
The word “contingency” was used in conjunction with those funds. Clerk Cindee Boyd said the unallocated money is in the event the village doesn’t collect its anticipated revenue during the fiscal year, and can be appropriated for this purpose.
Council entered into executive session to discuss “real estate,” and took no action.
Village officials are in negotiations with a downtown property owner to purchase a private building and build the police station. However, there is already a tenant at the location council is looking to acquire. Likewise, ongoing discussion as to what to do with the old police department was also staged behind closed doors.
