Linda Hight’s jaw dropped when she walked into the Grange Building and saw the purple rosette hanging beneath a realistic still life of a simple wash basin.

“I never would have thought that one would have won,” she said. “Maybe that one,” she said, pointing to a painting of a cat on a pillow, “or even that one,” shifting her attention to another of her creations that showed a basket of sewing supplies. “I just never thought he would have picked the one he did.”
Although Hight is still considered an amateur in the competition because she has had no formal training, judge Mike Major of Russells Point and Urbana, felt differently.
