When Thane Admire was being treated for leukemia at Christmastime two years ago, the outpouring of gifts and support touched the young boy so much he wanted to make a difference to other children.

Thane, a leukemia survivor and recipient of an outpouring of support when he went through treatment, donated $100 of his birthday money and money he raised to help another youth shop for Christmas presents. Shortly after his 7th birthday and the start of this school year, Thane approached Bellefontaine Police Department’s DARE Officer Andy Kennedy and asked if he could donate his birthday money to other children.
“I kind of wanted to do it to help other kids,” the Bellefontaine Elementary second-grader said. “I know some parents can be bad or don’t have a lot of money, so I wanted to give them some money to help out.
“One time I walked into the bus (waiting area) and he was in the hall so I said, ‘Can I donate?’” the boy said.
Officer Kennedy knew the perfect way to reach children would be through the annual Shop with a Cop program which is supported by the city’s Fraternal Order of Police chapter, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and, for the first time this year, by probation officers with the Bellefontaine Municipal Court.
