Scott Hedges, 46, of Columbus, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and with two counts of leaving the scene of a crash following collisions that occurred Saturday morning.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded about 8 a.m. to the area of county roads 43 and 18.
The driver reportedly was operating an eastbound vehicle on CR 43 when he drove through the intersection of CR 18 and into a yard at 3625 CR 18 and struck a small barn owned by Ken Headings. He then left the scene and continued northbound on CR 18.
He then crossed County Road 11 and his vehicle went up an embankment and struck a tree at a property at 302 CR 11. Hedges reportedly continued driving and deputies located him in the parking lot of storage units located at 466 W. Lake Ave., Bellefontaine.
Deputies observed signs that he was under the influence, and field sobriety tests were administered. The defendant was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he submitted to a urine test, and deputies are awaiting the test results.
Hedges also was cited for operating an unsafe vehicle, as deputies noted that one of his tires had no tread left. He was lodged in the jail.
• Mark Anthony Harpest, 52, of 2074 County Road 10, Bellefontaine, was charged with OVI and was issued summons for possession of drug paraphernalia and for having an open container in a motor vehicle following an incident Sunday.
Deputies received a report of a caller who observed Harpest’s vehicle driving erratically in the area of county roads 31 and 11 about 5:30 p.m. He caller said the driver was all over the road and ran a stop sign at that location.
The suspect’s vehicle was located at the Stony Creek Church of the Brethren, 3570 S. County Road 31, Bellefontaine. When deputies arrived, Harpest reportedly was outside the vehicle and asleep on the sidewalk.
Deputies observed that he displayed signs of intoxication, and he refused to take field sobriety tests.
During an inventory of his vehicle, deputies located a bottle of vodka, beer cans and a pipe with marijuana residue.
At the jail, the defendant refused to take a blood alcohol concentration test. He was released to a sober person.
