Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol report that no impaired drivers were found during two OVI checkpoints conducted over the weekend in Logan and Union counties.
In the first checkpoint Friday evening in Bellefontaine, a total of 542 vehicles passed through the area of south Main Street and Lake Avenue, where troopers worked with Bellefontaine Police Department officers and Logan County Sheriff’s Office deputies to speak with motorists.
During the past three years, Logan County crash statistics indicate there have been a total of 60 impaired driver crashes within a three-mile radius of the checkpoint area. Three of those crashes were alcohol-related fatalities and 17 were injury-related crashes.
In the sobriety checkpoint Saturday evening on Industrial Parkway near Scottslawn Road in Marysville, a total of 180 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Union County employees with the Ohio Department of Transportation and Union County Emergency Management Agency provided support for the checkpoint.
For the Marysville area checkpoint, crash statistics indicate there have been a total of 23 impaired driver crashes in the past three years within a three-mile radius of that location. Two of the crashes were alcohol-related fatalities and 11 were injury crashes.
The multi-agency sobriety checkpoints illustrate law enforcement agencies’ unified front in deterring and combating impaired driving, troopers said. Even though no impaired drivers were apprehended, participating law enforcement agencies consider the efforts successful for providing the chance to raise awareness and offer a general deterrence for impaired driving.
