With income tax filing deadline just around the corner, some local residents are reporting they have been contacted by anonymous callers claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service and threatening a lawsuit.
The IRS reports through its website that this has been an active year for IRS-related scams and says that residents should not give out personal information over the phone or via email.
In addition to the scam that threatens a lawsuit and possible imprisonment if prompt payment is not made, the IRS reports scammers often claim to need to verify information from a tax form, attempt to gain employee information by contacting business human relations representatives directly or pose as taxpayer advocacy groups claiming to represent taxpayers.
There are also a wide variety of email “phishing” scams, the IRS warns.
