Bellefontaine’s boys basketball team played a strong second half at Marysville on Saturday, but it was not enough to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit.

The Monarchs fought off the Chiefs’ second-half surge to win 69-62 in a non-league matchup.
The Chiefs are now 6-10 on the season.
Marysville started quickly, jumping out to a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Monarchs outscored the Chiefs 21-16 in the second quarter to lead 41-26 at halftime.
“They got off to a very fast start shooting the ball,” said Bellefontaine head coach Henry Stolly. “Although we got good looks at the basket, our shots were off early in the game which allowed Marysville to build a lead. Getting down 10 by the end of the first quarter and 15 at halftime was a tough task to bounce back from against a talented and senior-driven team like Marysville.”
Bellefontaine closed to within 10 points (54-44) at the end of the third quarter and the Chiefs outscored the hosts 18-15 in the fourth quarter.
“Once we settled down, we played much better at both ends of the floor in the second half,” said Stolly. “Our team showed great resolve in the second half pulling within two possessions (four points) midway through the final quarter.”
Junior forward Hayden Nease enjoyed a big day for the Chiefs with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Jacob Rogan contributed 12 points and Isaiah Miller and Jack Clement had nine points apiece.
The Chiefs had to play without sophomore center Spencer George, who suffered an ankle injury Friday at Kenton Ridge. He is expected to return sometime this week.
Jevon Knox led the Monarchs with 18 points.
In the junior varsity game, Marysville won 70-38. Javon Warner paced the Chiefs with 12 points.
Bellefontaine lost the freshman contest 45-30. Aaron Malarkey led Bellefontaine with 12 points.
The Chiefs are back in action Tuesday at Graham.
