Riverside’s girls basketball team had little trouble handling a struggling Elgin squad Thursday and picked up a 57-29 Northwest Central Conference road victory.
The Pirates are now 10-3 on the season and 5-1 in the NWCC, while the Comets remain winless at 0-14, 0-5.
Riverside shut down Elgin in the first quarter to take a quick 14-3 lead. The Pirates kept rolling in the second quarter with a 20-10 run, which made it a 34-13 halftime score.
In the third quarter, Riverside outscored Elgin 11-7. That made it a 45-20 advantage. The Pirates wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 12-9 run.
Riverside gave a balanced effort on offense. Jade Copas paced the Pirates with 12 points, Kirstin Schlumbohm had 11 points, Lauryn Sanford tallied 10 points and Allison Knight added nine points. Riverside hosts Houston on Saturday for a non-league game.
