Lawrence Hurst, 56, of Galion, and Tyler Sarven, 35, of Springfield, each were charged with felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, along with misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon.
Officers of the Washington Township Police Department on patrol in the area of U.S. Route 33 East of Russells Point about 3:30 p.m. observed a pickup roll through a stop sign and initiated the stop at Township Road 94.
Officers made contact with the driver, Hurst, and said the odor of alcoholic beverage was detectable coming from inside the vehicle. There was also evidence of drug use. K-9 Bruno was deployed and alerted on the vehicle.
A methamphetamine glass pipe was recovered, along with a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance residue suspected to be methamphetamine, and open containers of alcohol.
Officers spoke with Hurst and his passenger, Sarven, both of whom stated the drugs and drug paraphernalia belonged to the other individual. Hurst said the alcohol was his.
Both men also had outstanding warrants, and were arrested and lodged in the Logan County Jail. Hearst also received a citation for driving under suspension and a stop sign violation.
