WL-S students collaborate for Earth Day projects

West Liberty-Salem students participated in Earth Day and United Day of Service projects April 24 in Logan and Champaign counties in a collaborative effort to make improvements to local green spaces.
National Honor Society and Key Club members picked up trash at Pointe North Park near Urbana, along with cleaning, mulching and planting flowers at Kingscreek Ballpark, the Adriel campus and Lions Park. The students also cleaned picnic tables, hung new basketball nets and stained wooden benches.
In addition, second-graders participated in the Outdoor Environmental Education Collaborate Earth Day Project at Graham Middle School.
More than 700 students throughout the Champaign County came together to learn about habitat restoration and conversation.
Funding and support for in the outdoor program was provided by Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, North Central Ohio Solid Waste District, Sportsmens Alliance Foundation and the Outdoor Environmental Education Collaborative Outreach Committee. Students traveled to five different learning stations that included soil conservation, animal/plant life, planting soy beans, erosion and farm animals.
Service projects took place on the West Liberty-Salem campus as well, including cleaning up school grounds, janitorial duties and administrative functions.
West Liberty-Salem presents White Tiger Awards
West Liberty-Salem High School hosted its annual White Tiger Award Ceremony Monday, recognizing high school students who work hard, have a great attitude, give from the heart and are positive role models for other pupils as nominated by a teacher, counselor or the athletic director.
Awards were presented to: Angeline Allison, Megan Dillon, Gavin Harrison, Blake Cushman, Jaison Council, Paige Shaffer, Kelsey Day, Ashlyn Parks, Mason Powell, Edward Hallman, Gavin Schoenleben, Dawson Jenkins, Adam Watkins, Grant Schoenleben, Emma Hostetler, Brynn Cooper, Amanda Domachowski, Kylee Francis and Keegan Brown.

FCCLA member advances to national contest

Four Bellefontaine High School Family Career & Community Leaders of America members presented their projects April 24 and 25 at the Ohio FCCLA conference, and one of the pupils qualified for the National FCCLA Competition in Anaheim, Calif., this summer.
Lily Evans earned a gold metal and earned the spot for the national contest with her Advocacy project. Lily’s project involves advocating for more life skills curriculum and mental health support systems in the public schools.
Taryn Mullins also earned a gold metal in the Job Interview event. Nathan Conner earned a silver rating for his Leadership project and Ethan Higgins earned a bronze rating for his Recycle and Redesign project.
