No other major sports city has endured the amount of mocking and jokes Cleveland has for the last five decades.
Cleveland’s failures have become capitalized over time: The Drive, The Fumble, The Shot. Every time they have been mentioned fans had to relive the torture of another missed opportunity.
But all of that misery was washed away Sunday night. The Cavaliers, led by their local prodigy, wrote a long awaited joyous chapter of Cleveland sports history with their improbable and historic NBA Finals run.
Earnest Byner and Jose Mesa, you are now forgiven.
This championship wasn’t just about basketball or about the Cavaliers. This was about Cleveland. This was about a city that had gotten used to saying “maybe next year” over and over again and ultimately getting disappointed every time.
But now, instead of having to watch another city’s fans celebrate, the party is coming to Cleveland.
“It is going to be the biggest party the city has ever seen,” said LeBron James, who made good on his quest to bring a championship to Northeast Ohio.
