Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report two motorists and a 2-year-old passenger were transported from the scene of a three-vehicle crash about 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Drivers Robert C. Irwin, 27, of Jackson Center, and Susan E. Bergman, 45, of Versailles, were transported by Huntsville EMS and Indian Lake EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries.
Irwin was then transferred to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, and was reported in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning.
The two-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the Irwin vehicle, also was a transported by Indian Lake EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries. Family members of the boy were contacted and asked to respond to the hospital, deputies said.
Deputies report Irwin was operating a westbound 2014 Chevrolet Cruze on U.S. Route 33 in the area of Township Road 221 when it is suspected he may have started to fall asleep. He drove into the eastbound lane, striking the driver’s side of an eastbound 2014 Dodge Caravan operated by Eve M. Mitro, 30, of Sidney.
Mitro then drove off the left side of the road, striking a guardrail and coming to rest in the westbound lane.
After the collision with the minivan, the Irwin vehicle reportedly began to rotate in the eastbound lane and was struck on its passenger side by an eastbound 2022 Honda Pilot operated by Bergman.
The Irwin continued to rotate after the second collision and came to a final rest off of the west side of T.R. 221.
The Bergman vehicle also spun and struck a guardrail, coming to rest off the west side of U.S. 33.
Mitro was checked at the scene by Huntsville EMS, but did not report any injuries.
Damage was heavy to all three vehicles. Mitro and Bergman were wearing their seat belts, but Irwin reportedly was not wearing his seat belt. The two-year-old in the Irwin vehicle was properly restrained in a child safety seat, deputies said.
The Multi-County Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene and the investigation continues. No citations have yet been issued.
• Jacob E. Reinhart, 31, of Quincy, was transported by Indian Lake EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of possible injuries sustained in a crash Tuesday in front of the Muchinippi Church, 12306 State Route 274, Lewistown.
Deputies report Ross R. Ludwig, 19, of Jackson Center, was operating a westbound 2022 Honda Ridgeline on S.R. 274 about 3:40 p.m. when he struck the rear of a westbound 2013 Ford Escape operated by Reinhart that had stopped in traffic, waiting to turn onto County Road 21.
After striking the Reinhart vehicle, Ludwig’s vehicle struck the steps, fence and a boulder in front of the church. Ludwig, who did not report any injuries, was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead.
Damage was heavy to both vehicles, which were towed from the scene. The crash report states both drivers were wearing only their shoulder belt.
• Deputies also responded to the area of 2426 County Road 57 about 9:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, in reference to a garbage truck striking low-hanging overhead cable wires.
Carl R. Burrows, 47, of Huntsville, reportedly was operating the westbound Republic Services truck when he stated he heard an unusual noise and he found that the top knuckle of his truck had struck the wires. Deputies said Spectrum was already on the scene tending to the wires. No citations were listed with the crash report.
• Deputies responded Monday afternoon to 6885 County Road 44, North Lewisburg, on a report of a hit-skip crash.
Property owner Robert Loeloff Jr. reported he heard a noise that woke up him overnight, and discovered Monday that his mailbox had been damaged. Deputies said an eastbound vehicle struck a road sign and the mailbox and then left the scene.
