Among the guests at this week’s Bellefontaine Rotary Club meeting was World War II veteran Lloyd G. “Doc” McNamee.
The 93-year-old West Mansfield resident was in attendance to hear author Janet Blank discuss her book, Why Small Townships Produce Big Character: The History of East Liberty, Ohio … One Small Town With Big Character.
McNamee, who served as a tailgunner aboard a bomber aircraft, said he was the only member of his crew to complete all 35 required missions.
He recalled a flight over China that resulted in the deaths of four crew members and injured several others and said the co-pilot on that mission would later fly the first B-50 bomber capable of being refueled in midair.
The Purple Heart medal recipient said he recently saw film footage online of the aircraft he flew in (and was likely aboard during filming).
