West Liberty-Salem’s girls basketball team got its offense going against visiting Triad on Thursday and ran away with a 68-27 win in a local Ohio Heritage Conference contest.
The Tigers are now 3-0 on the season and start league play at 1-0. The Cardinals fall to 2-2, 0-2.
Triad hung tough in the first quarter and stayed with WL-Salem. Selena Weaver scored a layup in the final seconds to put the Tigers up 15-13.
WL-Salem took over after that by outscoring Triad 24-3 in the second period. The Tigers had a 14-0 run to start the quarter. That put them out to a 29-13 advantage.
Triad didn’t score its first basket until the 2:46 mark of the second period with a three pointer for a 29-16 score. WL-Salem finished out the quarter with a 10-0 run to go into halftime on top 39-16.
The Tigers continued to pressure the Cardinals in the third quarter with an 18-2 run. That extended WL-Salem’s lead to a 57-18 score. The Tigers wrapped up the win with an 11-9 effort in the final quarter.
WL-Salem saw 10 different players score on Thursday. Selena Weaver led the way with 17 points, Chaley Wade had 14 points, Hallie Smith put up nine points and Grace Estes tallied eight points.
Cati LeVan and Frani LeVan both had 10 points to lead Triad’s offense.
In junior varsity action, WL-Salem beat Triad 36-2 in two quarters..
Sophia Hardwick led the Tigers with 10 points.
WL-Salem hosts Northeastern on Saturday, while Triad hosts Mechanicsburg.
