It was a climatic finish between two of the area’s best track and field program’s Friday as West Liberty-Salem’s girls edged Bellefontaine by 1 1/2 points to win its own Reliant Mechanical Tiger Invitational.
The Tiger girls won 132-130.5 over the Chieftains in a 10-team meet. Versailles came in third with 99 points, Lehman Catholic was fourth with 69 points and Benjamin Logan took fifth with 66.5 points.
“Our team has been battling the flu bug all week, so I wasn’t sure how we’d perform,” said WL-Salem girls head coach Ann Vogel. “I was really proud of how the girls battled for every point. Our younger girls really wanted to send our seniors out with a win on their last meet at Tiger Stadium. It’s nice to have this kind of momentum heading into the postseason.”
A talented Springfield Shawnee squad won the boys 10-team meet with 151 points. Versailles claimed the runnerup spot with 135 points, Ben Logan finished third with 113 points, Bellefontaine was fourth with 105 points and the host Tigers were fifth with 70 points.
