The countdown to tax day has begun, and the United Way of Logan County is offering a free online service to assist households earning less than $62,000 a year to file their income taxes.
MyFreeTaxes.com is an online tool that allows eligible taxpayers nationwide to file state and federal tax returns for free using a simple step-by-step process that includes telephone, e-mail, and online chat support from IRS-certified specialists. The process takes less than an hour and typically saves participants about $200.
The fast and secure filing site powered by H&R Block helps maximize refunds for eligible families and individuals so they can claim valuable tax credits to help keep more money in their pockets.
A new national survey finds that 72 percent of working Americans making $62,000 or less are unaware they qualify for free tax filing and counseling.
According to the IRS, only 1.5 percent of Logan County residents filed their taxes for free last year. Most paid an average of $260 to have someone help prepare their returns.
“We recognize that affordable tax preparation services are out of reach for many in our community,” said Dave Bezusko, United Way of Logan County executive director.
