One of the most picturesque avenues in Bellefontaine’s urban forest took a blow this week as the city Shade Tree Commission felled 13 mature trees that were damaged by utility company trimming.

The Bellefontaine Shade Tree Commission plans to replace the trees along the avenue with smaller maples that will not interfere with the power lines before year’s end. The stretch of trees through Mary Rutan Park along the north side of east Williams Avenue from Allison Drive to the Hoffman Municipal Swimming Pool was removed because the trees were dying from excessive pruning, commission chairwoman Shelley Moore said.
“We’ve had a lot of complaints because everyone considers that the most beautiful street in town,” Ms. Moore said of the avenue where the overarching canopy of leaves form a veritable rainbow of rustic colors in the autumn and icicle-laden interwoven branches can create an equally impressive view in the winter.
“But it became a hazard and we had to remove them,” she said. “It was only the ones that had been cut by (Dayton Power & Light). They were starting to decay from the top down.”
