Local transportation research officials hope a multi-state effort will bring national development of smart highways to the Transportation Research Center outside East Liberty.
Joanna Pinkerton, a deputy director at TRC, spoke at Monday’s meeting of the Bellefontaine Rotary Club about smart mobility technology.
She said The Ohio State University and Ohio Department of Transportation are teaming up with transportation departments in Michigan and Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon University to promote the region and TRC as the best choice for testing crash avoidance, automated driving and energy conservation technologies.
“California and Silicon Valley may have the technology,” she said, “but the research should be done here. We build things here … the bulk of the nation’s manufacturing is in this region.”
