MATHEWS |
A suspect was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, theft of a credit card and for felony counts of possession of drugs and trafficking in drugs related to an incident this weekend that was reported to officers of theWashington Township Police Department.
Anthony M. Mathews, 32, address at large, was located Sunday in West Liberty by officers of the West Liberty Police Department and was placed under arrest. He was lodged in the Logan County Jail about 8 p.m.
About 11:10 a.m. Friday, Washington Township Police Department officers first responded to the home of an 80-year-old Lakeview woman in reference to her vehicle being stolen. When the officer arrived, the woman stated she had opened up her home and provided shelter to Mathews because she felt bad for him that he did not have any place to go.
Thursday evening, Mathews reportedly had positioned pillows on the couch and covered the pillows with blankets to make it appear that he was asleep on the couch. When a subject arrived at her home Friday morning in an attempt to make contact with Mathews, the woman discovered the defendant was gone.
Shortly after that, the victim realized her vehicle was gone and her bank card was missing. She checked her account and noticed a charge against her card was made earlier that morning at a local gas station in the amount of $78.
She contacted her bank and froze her account to prevent any further charges on her card. Authorities quickly listed the vehicle as a stolen vehicle. Sunday, West Liberty Police Department officers responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle in Lions Park, and they learned that the suspicious vehicle was the vehicle reported as stolen by the Lakeview resident. Mathews was still with the vehicle, and he was apprehended and transported to the Logan County Jail on behalf of the Washington Township Police.
Washington Township officers then went to the Logan County Jail and formally charged Mathews with theft of a motor vehicle, theft of a credit card, and also unauthorized use of a credit card.
West Liberty officers charged Mathews for drugs he had in his possession, with an additional charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers noted he also credit cards from other individuals in his possession while at Lions Park.
He also was charged with tampering with evidence.
