Curt M. Leatherman, 34, of 253 W. Township Road 199, Bellefontaine, was issued a summons Thursday for child endangering and reckless operation related to a May 9 incident.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the West Liberty Fire Department initially were dispatched to his residence about 8:25 p.m. May 9 in reference to a pickup on fire in the yard.
Firefighters were able to quickly dispense the vehicle fire, and deputies met with Leatherman and his 12-year-old son and 16-year-old nephew who had been in the truck. They said they had been hauling brushwood on the property.
Leatherman told deputies that that smoke started in the hood of the vehicle in the engine area, and that he and his son and nephew exited the vehicle when it caught on fire to call the fire department.
Shortly after clearing the scene, deputies were dispatched to two nearby properties in reference to the neighbors reporting that Leatherman allegedly had been driving on Township Road 199 and Dipple Drive with his son and his nephew on the hood of the vehicle.
One of the neighbors provided deputies with home security footage that showed the pickup driving southbound on Dipple Drive with a child on the hood of the vehicle and a man driving the vehicle. Another witness also reported observing one of the younger males fall off the of the hood of the vehicle while it was moving.
Deputies were able to follow-up with Leatherman May 31, and he signed for the summonses, agreeing with deputies that it was fortunate that his son and nephew were not hurt during the incident.
