Traveling back in time to the pioneer days, examining local insects and wildlife, putting on a crime-solving hat to solve mysteries and filming mini action movies are just a few of the topics explored by pupils this week at the Summer Enrichment Academy.
At the 12th annual program, 390 students from around Logan County and also from the Ridgemont School District had the chance to learn new skills and gain fresh insights in the 29 different classes taught by area school teachers and professionals.
Throughout the week of activities at Bellefontaine High School, the youths in grades 2 through 8 also had the chance to meet new friends from other schools and strengthen bonds with their fellow classmates.
Soon-to-be Bellefontaine Intermediate School third-graders Lane Howard and Hayden Maus said they have been best friends since kindergarten, but they didn’t get to see each other much during the past school year because they were in different classes. So the chance to take the “Crazy for Chemistry” class instructed by Bellefontaine Elementary School teacher Katie Davis was enjoyable for them.
“All of this class has been fun,” Lane said while the pair worked together mixing ingredients for silly putty Wednesday.
“We also grew crystals this week by heating water and borax together and then letting it set overnight. Then today, we pulled our pipe cleaners out of the mixture and the crystals had formed.”
