Regular school days extended
West Liberty-Salem students for a second straight year likely will be the last remaining area students to resume classes for the 2016-17 school year following action taken Tuesday in a regular school board meeting.
The 2016-17 school year at WL-S commences Sept. 19 and concludes June 2. The board approved an amendment to the 2016-17 school calendar Tuesday, extending by 30 minutes each school day for the entire year, “to allow for schedule changes related to construction and movement of students during construction phase 4, 5 and 6.”
Also built in to the extended school days are three calamity days for bad weather. In the event no calamity days are necessary, Superintendent Kraig Hissong said the calendar may be amended again to reduce the number of extended days necessary to meet a regular school year.
Even with a delayed start to the school year, extending a regular school day by 30 minutes allows for more instructional time for students, school administrators have said.
It takes 11 30-minute extended days to amount to one full school day, WL-S administrators said.
