The major spillway replacement project scheduled for this year definitely won’t affect tourists as work is not scheduled to begin until after the traditional Labor Day close to the season, Ohio Department of Natural Resources officials report.

“We plan to bid it out this summer with construction beginning in the fall,” Indian Lake State Park Manager George Sholtis said. “Most of the work should be done outside of the tourist season. There shouldn’t be any impact in that regard.”
The final design for the $8 million project is not yet complete, but is the topic of a discussion set for 7:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 25, at the Indian Lake Community Church Lighthouse, Russells Point. Input from the session will be taken into account before the final design is released in June, Mr. Sholtis and ODNR spokesman John Wisse said.
“The meeting is to introduce the project, show plans for the spillway and provide information,” Mr. Sholtis said. “After that, they will basically finalize the plans and accept a bid package up to a certain date.
“The biggest thing about it long-term is that the existing structure is old and needs replaced,” he added. “But once it’s replaced there won’t be any disruption for a long time. It is a necessary thing we have to do.”
