A pair of siblings went head to head and came away with the top honors in their respective classes Thursday during the 2016 Logan County Junior Fair Goat Show.
Maria Henderson, 11, and her sister Isabel Henderson, 10, both of East Liberty, took champion and reserve champion honors, respectively, in the junior dairy goat division. Chloe Crumm, 9, of Zanesfield, exhibited the champion dairy goat in the senior class.
The brother/sister competitors, Tyler Slaven, 15, and Monica Slaven, 18, both of DeGraff, garnered champion and reserve champion titles, respectively, in the pygmy goat division. Tyler also was second in the senior showmanship contest.
In only her second year of competition, Ava Shroyer, 11, of DeGraff, showed the champion market goat, her first win.
Perennial favorite Grace Barger, 18, of Bellefontaine, had the reserve champion market goat, in addition to taking the champion banner for her meat production doe. Madison Payne, 15, of Belle Center, took reserve champion honors in the meat production doe contest.
Taking the top spot in the senior showmanship contest was Ruth Winner, 17, of DeGraff, after taking second last year. Brody Rhoads, 12, of DeGraff, got his first win earning first place in the intermediate showmanship division with Chloe Reynolds in the second spot. Mason Jackson, 11, of Zanesfield, corralled first place in the junior showmanship contest, with Cooper Hunt, 9, of Bellefontaine, taking second place.
Of the entire group of goat show exhibitors, judge Phil Myers of Washington Court House repeatedly referred to the youths as “an outstanding group” and commended them for the quality of animals and their efforts at every level.
“Really outstanding livestock and outstanding exhibitors,” said Mr. Myers, who operates Buckeye Illini Genetics, focusing on Boer and Boer cross show goats.
