Dean Reames came to the 2018 Junior Fair Rabbit Show empty handed, but the loss of arabbit from his pen didn’t keep the 11-year-old West Mansfield boy from taking home some hardware.
Showman winner overcomes rough week “You usually don’t lose one rabbit out of pen,” Dean said, “but we found one dead in my pen last week and my brother (Walker) had one die.
“We think somebody poisoned them. A doctor is looking into it.”
Without a complete pen, Dean wasn’t able to enter an exhibit, but he was able to compete as a showman.
Meghan Orr loaned Dean a rabbit and he competed with the other junior showmanship contestants.
He excelled despite the past week’s setback and took first place in his category.
“It felt really good,” Dean said of the win.
For Dean, a rabbit is a rabbit when it comes to showing a judge what you know.
“You have to pose it, point out different parts, named the parts, flip it over for the judge and check it for diseases,” the son of Janie Roach and Mike Reames said.
Show organizer Janet Sidders said there were 53 exhibitors and 176 rabbits in this year’s show, down slightly from 2017.
