Second- and third-graders at Benjamin Logan Elementary School recently participated in a Save The Turkey Challenge to review test- taking strategies.
Students received a letter from “Gobble” the turkey, asking for their help to escape. Gobble left clues for his escape plan that involved solving reading, writing and math questions.
The farmer (Mrs. Ridge) asked students if they had seen her turkey who had disappeared. Art teacher Mr. Reese also helped design a turkey and his costume pieces to create a disguise.
With only 75 minutes to help the turkey escape, many classrooms weren’t able to successfully save the turkey. Luckily, the farmers and others will have a great Thanksgiving meal.
This challenge was designed by Mrs. Solano as a requirement for a RESA leadership project. Mrs. Solano completed a gamification research project during her student teaching at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Gamification is simply adding game-like elements to increase engagement.
“Students were very excited to help the turkey and answer the questions with their partner. It was a fun way to sneak in some test prep and let students practice what they have learned,” she said.
