Robert A. Mortimer passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2020 in Country Club Retirement Center in Mt Vernon, Ohio. He was 96.
He was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Cortland to the late Frank and Ruth Maier Mortimer and was graduated from Palmyra High School.
On Feb. 3, 1945 he married Bessie Mazzagotte who preceded him in death in 2013.
For many years Bob worked as a tenant farmer before settling his own dairy farm in Knox County in the early 1970’s. With his wife, Bessie, they managed livestock and crops until their retirement in 1995.
Life on the farm didn’t leave much room for hobbies, but in retirement Bob enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Easy going and reserved, he liked bird watching and always found time to read Farm and Dairy Magazine.
An avid sports fan, Bob followed all Cleveland professional sports teams, The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Dayton Flyers.
He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law; Robert and Barbara Mortimer of Butler, Wesley and Susan Mortimer of Butler, and Steven and Mary Mortimer of Bellefontaine; grandchildren Bill (Bobbie) Mortimer, Andy (Amber) Mortimer, Wesley, Jr. (Brenda) Mortimer, Tonya Green, Chris (Kristy) Mortimer, Carrie (Matt) Harriman, James (Amanda) Mortimer, Lisa (Joel) Dennis, Heather (Pierre-Henri) Mortimer-Charoy; 20 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren with a new one on the way. Also surviving is Bob’s sister Evelyn Kremer.
In addition to his wife, Bob was preceded in death by a grandson-in-law Gary Green; and siblings Frank, Jr., Marjorie, George Wesley, Richard and an infant brother.
